The new British eSIM provider, Amigo, in partnership with Three UK, has introduced a range of eSIMs offering a unique combination: travel data, unlimited calling minutes, and a standard +44 UK phone number. At launch, this service is available for travellers in over 70 destinations.
This unique feature benefits two key groups of travellers. Firstly, UK residents travelling abroad can now make affordable calls and remain reachable on a standard UK number, avoiding the high roaming charges from their domestic provider. Secondly, it’s an ideal solution for tourists and others visiting the UK, providing them with affordable mobile data and the convenience of a temporary local number.
The Problem: Most Travel eSIMs Are ‘Data-Only’
A common misconception is that any travel eSIM allows you to make calls. However, the majority are ‘data-only’. While modern smartphones can keep two SIMs active simultaneously, a travel eSIM does not take over the voice services of your regular provider. Anyone using their domestic number to make calls from abroad will be subject to their provider’s high roaming tariffs.

For travel to international most destinations (approx. 70 countries):

- £20 for 18GB
- £35 for 30GB
For travel to the UK (e.g., as a tourist or for family visits): The data allowances for use within the United Kingdom are considerably more generous:

- £15 for 100GB

Our Verdict: Best for Voice, with Some Data Sweet Spots
At Find your eSIM, our analysis shows that for most destinations, this Amigo plan is especially worthwhile for travellers who also need voice minutes. For data-only usage, more competitive options are often available, including from Amigo themselves.
Other eSIM providers also offer voice options, but often with key differences. For instance, aloSIM partners with the VoIP service Hushed, providing users with credit for calls and a +1 (North American) phone number. While providers like eTravelSIM and Airalo are increasingly integrating voice plans, the provided phone number isn’t always British, and the minute allowance is rarely as generous as Amigo’s.
However, the plan does have some data ‘sweet spots’. In Peru, for example, this offer stands out not only for its included phone number but also for its highly competitive data rates.
