You will find 'unlimited' eSIM plans for Suriname, but I generally don't recommend them. They tend to be either too expensive, come with a very restrictive fair use policy, or the provider isn't transparent about the details, leaving you unsure of the real limitations.

Be especially wary of 'unlimited' travel eSIMs with vague fair use policies that say speeds may be reduced by local network partners. That often hides significant throttling and low network priority. Mobile data is genuinely pricey in Suriname, so a truly unlimited plan without a tight daily cap is hard to come by. For most travellers, a fixed data bundle offers better value and predictability. Local networks in Suriname

There are two major mobile networks in Suriname:

• Digicel
• Telesur

Both provide coverage in urban areas like Paramaribo and along the main coastal regions. Ask locals which is better and you'll get differing opinions, but the general consensus leans towards Digicel having a more modern network that often performs better in urban areas. Telesur, on the other hand, may offer a better chance of signal if you venture deeper into the remote interior.

Crucially, be aware that outside the major cities and coastal strip, mobile coverage in Suriname is very limited and can be completely absent. The country is sparsely populated, especially inland. If you plan to visit the rainforest or other remote regions, check coverage maps beforehand using tools like Nperf.

Buying a local SIM card

If your phone is eSIM-compatible, an eSIM remains the most convenient option. I'd recommend ordering a travel eSIM in advance, particularly the local Digicel eSIM via Sim Local. Not only is it convenient, you also benefit from English-language support (which isn't always available locally) and you can often get a discount.

If your phone isn't compatible, or you need plenty of local calling minutes, a local SIM card is your alternative. Both Telesur and Digicel Suriname offer various prepaid options, but there's a big difference depending on where and when you buy:

1. Buying at the airport (PBM, Johan Adolf Pengel): Around the arrival times of SLM and KLM flights, Digicel usually has a kiosk in the arrivals hall next to baggage claim. They mostly sell tourist packages, which are typically data-only (no local number) and significantly more expensive than buying in the city. The same Digicel options are available through Sim Local with a discount, giving you immediate connectivity on arrival at a lower price.

2. Buying in the city (Paramaribo or other towns): This is the cheapest option. Visit an official Digicel or Telesur store, or an authorised reseller. You'll get a local Surinamese phone number included, and prices are much lower, for example Digicel around 30 GB for roughly SRD 950 (about £24) or Telesur around 75 GB for roughly SRD 953 (about £24). The drawbacks are the hassle: you must visit a store, ID registration with your passport is mandatory, and it isn't immediate on arrival.

In summary: choose the online Digicel eSIM via Sim Local for the best balance of convenience, local network quality and value (especially with a discount). Opt for a local SIM bought in the city only if the absolute lowest price is your priority and you don't mind the extra effort. Avoid buying at the airport unless immediate (but expensive) connectivity is essential and your phone isn't eSIM-compatible.

Note: in several Caribbean countries Digicel has stopped selling its standard local prepaid plans to tourists, now often only offering pricier tourist packages. At the time of writing, this does not appear to be the case in Suriname.
